Stephanie Smith is an Oakland artist whose work merges art, design, and craft. Working across scales, the work explores psychology, perception, and viewer interaction. Her work plays with gender—juxtaposing masculine materials and minimalist forms with feminist thought, notions of craft, and a sense of the hand.
Smith also is one-half of smith|allen studio, an interdisciplinary studio exploring digital craft, art, and architecture. Focusing on site-specificity and nature through technology, smith|allen uses 3d printing, laser cutting, and water jet cutting with a focus on scale, materiality, and experience.
Stephanie Smith has shown at Interface Gallery in Oakland, ASC Projects in San Francisco, and Loakal Gallery in Oakland, among others. She has been in residence at Autodesk in 2014-15 and also was an artist-in-residence at Project 387 in 2013. Recently, smith|allen completed a large installation at Facebook. Her work has been published in Wired, 7x7, Architect Magazine, and Hi-Fructose, among other publications.
